Model G8
What is the Model G8 Youth Network?
The Model G8 Youth Network, first established in St Petersburg in 2006, is an informal international organisation of university students from around the world, specifically the eight G8 Member States and the observer countries. A non-governmental organisation, it exists to aid in the organisation of an annual Model G8 Youth Summit. Click here to link to the Network Homepage.
How many Youth Summits have there been to date?
The first summit was held in St Petersburg, Russia, in 2006. Since then there has been a summit in Berlin in 2007 and Tokyo in 2008. As the Youth Summit is always held in the country that the actual G8 Summit is held, the next Youth Summit will happen in Italy, either Rome or Milan, in early 2009.
What is the aim of the G8 Youth Summit?
Student delegates are expected to come to the summit with a clear understanding of their government's policy position. Unlike a Model United Nations conference, however, the event is a youth summit and subsequently the goal is to reach consensual decisions that offer unique solutions based on the students' thoughts and opinions, not merely a replication what actual governments may do.
At the end of the conference, much like the actual G8, a written communique is produced. This outlines the various soultions that have been found and agreed upon by the delegates during the course of the summit. The communiques of the last three Summits can be found here.
Who organises the Model G8 Youth Summit?
Again, much like the real G8 there is no centralised decision-making structure, and the Network is largely informal. Each summit is organised seperately by the organising committee of the host country, which in 2009 will be Italy. If you would like to get in touch with the Italian coordinators, send a message to the UK team by clicking here and we will ensure that your comments are passed on to the appropriate person.
In the UK, there is a Model G8 UK Central Organising Committee. To find out more about the committee, and to contact them directly, go to the Team page.
